HSPVA Friends welcomes non-cash gifts in support of the programs and services of the Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Gifts-in-kind (non-cash gifts) are primarily given to directly enhance the curriculum of Kinder HSPVA programs (for example, a musical instrument) or to support various fundraising efforts held throughout the year (for example, an item to auction off).
Upon receiving notification of a potential gift-in-kind, HSPVA Friends will provide a Gift-In-Kind Donation Form to the potential donor to collect information about the gift. If the potential gift is intended for Kinder HSPVA, we will share this information with the department to which the gift would be given in order to make sure that 1) the gift aligns with the needs and mission of the program and 2) any anticipated costs resulting from the acceptance of the gift have been considered. No gift-in-kind will be accepted until the proper clearances have been obtained.
HSPVA Friends will officially acknowledge the gift by providing the donor with a letter that includes a full description of the gift-in-kind and the purpose for which it was given to the organization. If the donor plans to take a tax deduction for the gift, he or she is responsible for the appraisal of the gift-in-kind, as it is the donor, not HSPVA Friends, who benefits from the tax deduction associated with the gift. Neither HSPVA Friends nor the individual Kinder HSPVA department accepting the gift can offer tax advice or declare the value of the contribution to the donor. Unless items are in perfect condition and recently purchased, receipts for the purchase of the gift will not be accepted as proof of the externally-appraised fair market value.
Internally, HSPVA Friends may record the gift-in-kind’s value based on the costs of comparable items and with the assistance of knowledgeable staff.
For gifts with qualified, externally-appraised values of over $5,000 and for gifts deemed rare or ‘priceless,’ HSPVA Friends will obtain the permission of the HSPVA Friends Board of Directors and the Kinder HSPVA Principal before accepting the donation.
The value of a person’s time, whether as a volunteer or as a professional providing a specialized service, is not considered a charitable contribution and is not countable as a gift-in-kind.
