University, college, and conservatory theatre department representatives are invited to attend the Greater Houston Area Auditions at Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (Kinder HSPVA) on Sunday, November 19, 2023. This event attracts 100 top high school senior theatre candidates from the greater Houston area.

EVENT INFORMATION

Applicants and Auditions

Audition candidates must:

  1. Be an enrolled high school senior on track to graduate;
  2. Have a 2.75 minimum GPA on a 4.0 scale (unweighted); and
  3. Plan to major in theatre in college.

Auditions will consist of the following:

  • Actors will perform two contrasting monologues totaling no more than two (2) minutes.
  • Musical theatre actors will perform a monologue and an accompanied song totaling no more than two (2) minutes.
  • Technical theatre candidates will make a three to five (3-5) minute portfolio presentation round-robin style. There will be time for Q&A with the student designers and technicians.

Callbacks

Programs may hold callbacks at their tables in the school’s large common area or request private callback rooms. Private callback rooms will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until we run out of rooms. Acting programs may call back musical theatre candidates. We respectfully request that callbacks be limited to a maximum of 10-15 minutes so that students are able to visit with as many schools as possible.

Audition Day Schedule

  • 10:00am – Doors open for Program Representatives to register and set up exhibit tables and callback rooms
  • 10:30am – Tech candidates report for check-in and set-up
  • 11:15am – Musical Theatre Candidates report for check-in
  • 11:30am-12:30pm – Design/Technical Theatre Round-Robin Auditions
  • 12:00pm-1:00pm – Lunch
  • 1:00pm – Musical Theatre Auditions
  • 1:00pm – Design/Technical callbacks begin
  • 1:15pm – Acting candidates report for check-in
  • 2:30pm – Acting Auditions
  • 2:30pm – Musical Theatre callbacks begin
  • 4:00pm – Auditions end
  • 4:00pm – Callbacks for all areas
  • 6:00pm – Callbacks conclude

Displays/Information Tables in the Commons

Programs may set up display/information tables in the school’s large common area, the hub of activity for the auditions. Display/information tables will be available for all programs, and there is room to set up a floor display—just let us know when you check-in.

Collateral Shipment

Programs may ship collateral material directly to the Kinder HSPVA Theatre Department prior to arrival. Please address your material in the following manner:

Hospitality

  • A student assistant from the Kinder HSPVA Theatre Department will be assigned to your program to assist with your administrative needs and to guide you through the school and venues as needed.
  • Lunch will be provided to program representatives, and coffee and snacks will be available all day.

Visitor parking is available for college representatives in the underground school garage. You may take advantage of street parking, which is free on Sundays (check signs and meters for restrictions). You may also make use of the many parking garages and lots located around the campus.

Please note: Due to a large concert in downtown Houston on Saturday, November 18, hotel rooms are booking quickly at increased rates. We recommend you book your room as soon as possible. Registration Instructions

  1. Please use one form to register all representatives from your college.
  2. Registration Fees: $50 per college, which includes one representative. Additional representatives may attend for $30 each.
  3. Have all attending representatives’ contact information ready (name, position, email, phone).
  4. If paying online (preferred), have credit card information ready. If you prefer to pay with a check, please make the check payable to “HSPVA Friends” and mail to HSPVA Friends, PO Box 52910, Houston, TX 77052.
