ON DISPLAY THROUGH MAY 27: Jason Moran (Instrumental ’93) exhibits visual art alongside artworks by influential American composer John Cage at Houston’s Josh Pazda Hiram Butler Gallery, owned by Josh Pazda (Visual Arts ’03).
In April, the Stuart Adams Collective (Instrumental ’23) opened for Jason Moran in concert at Discovery Green. Jason was joined by accomplished guitarist Raven Moran (Instrumental ’17). While in town, Jason spent a full day on campus with the Kinder HSPVA Jazz Ensembles. Also in April, Jason’s collaborative performance with Christian McBride at the Kennedy Center aired on PBS.

- Kevin Cahoon (Theatre ’89) is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical. Cahoon appears in Shucked.
- Sterling Overshown (Instrumental ’12) wrote the original music for Ain’t No Mo’, which received 6 nominations, including Best Play.
- Fernell Hogan (Theatre ’15) is featured in Kimberly Akimbo, which received 8 nominations, including Best Musical.
- Jarvis B. Manning, Jr. (Vocal ’05) appears in Some Like It Hot, which received 13 nominations, including Best Musical. Brandon Lee (Instrumental ’01) plays trumpet in the orchestra.
Kinder HSPVA Creative Writing faculty member Lupe Mendez recently gave the final reading of his term as 2022-2023 Texas Poet Laureate. Kinder HSPVA English teacher Ayokunle Falomo hosted the celebratory performance at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Kendrick Scott (Instrumental ’98) recently premiered his multi-media project Unearthed at DACAMERA in Houston, featuring Walter Smith, III (Instrumental ’98) and artwork by Robert Hodge (Visual Arts ’98). Janet Williams Adderley (Theatre ’74) celebrated the 30th anniversary of her acclaimed performing arts academy, The Adderley School. Check out this interview with Adderley.

Eden MacAdam-Somer (Instrumental ’99) recently performed a concert of fiddle tunes, jazz, Rumi songs, and modern classical music in Houston, presented by the Foundation for Modern Music. MacAdam-Somer is Co-Chair of the Department of Contemporary Musical Arts at the New England Conservatory.
The Houston Chamber Choir recently performed Robert Gibson’s (Vocal ’07) arrangement of “We Shall Overcome” as part of their concert Ancestors’ Dream. Vocal alumni Gregory Goedecke (’14), Clipper Hamrick (’09), Ryan Stickney (’04), and Emily Wolfe (’15) sing in the Grammy Award-winning choir.
Pace Webb (Theatre ’00) is the owner of Daddy’s Chicken Shack, a California-based restaurant with a new location in the Houston Heights and plans to expand across the Greater Houston area and nationally. Listen to her talk about her experience in the Los Angeles food scene and starting Daddy’s.
2023 Grammy Award winner Robert Glasper (Instrumental ’97) recently kicked off Emancipation Park’s Jazzy Sunday Series. Glasper stopped by Kinder HSPVA with Lisa Harris (Vocal ’98) to present an informal jam session and Q&A for Instrumental and Vocal Music students.
Hannah Jones (Vocal ’18) has been selected as a member of Shared Voices, the Denyce Graves Foundation’s prestigious program to nurture young singers. Shared Voices and Jones were recently featured on ABC’s Good Morning America. This summer, Jones will perform several roles at Opera Theatre of St. Louis.
Russell Haehl (Instrumental ’08) is Artistic Director of the Houston Brass Quintet. The Quintet was recently featured in the Houston Chronicle.
Jonathan Wisner (Instrumental ’10) was named to the Seattle Symphony percussion section.
Simon Rowe (Instrumental ’80) and Matt Mullenweg (Instrumental ’02) were featured in San Francisco Classical Voice for the success of their new venue Keys Jazz Bistro.
