HSPVA Friends scholarships are made possible by donors who are committed to helping graduating Kinder HSPVA students reduce the burden of college expenses. Scholarships are organized by art area. Most winners will be announced at the Senior Awards receptions on Monday, May 18.

All general application materials must be submitted to HSPVA Friends using the application below. Incomplete applications will not be considered. If you have questions, contact Patrice Wooten Hightower, HSPVA Friends’ Operations Manager.

All scholarships are awarded on an objective and nondiscriminatory basis. HSPVA Friends does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, national orgin, disability, sexual orientation, or any other restricting classification in the distribution of scholarship funds.

Tips:

  • Fill out the General Application Form below one time. All applicants will be considered for every scholarship for which they qualify.
  • Note that one of the college scholarships requires supplementary material in addition to the General Application Form: The Jason Moran Jazz College Scholarship. Please review the requirements, and if you wish to be considered for this scholarship, submit the supplementary materials.
  • HSPVA Friends scholarships may be applied to tuition, travel, room/board, and supplies/equipment. The award may be paid directly to a vendor or as a reimbursement.

College Scholarships

Applicants will be considered for all of the scholarships for which they qualify.

Purpose: Need-based and merit-based college scholarship

Amount: $4,000 for one graduating senior

Selection Process: Determined by the Scholarship Committee, led by the Kinder HSPVA counselors, based on their knowledge of a deserving senior who needs the scholarship in order to attend college. Student should have a proven track record of leadership and dedication to excellence. Student should demonstrate a financial need. Selection is not specifically based on artistic or academic merit.

Application Requirements: Students must submit an HSPVA Friends General Application Form.

Made possible by an endowment from the William F. Carleton Trust for Dance, in honor of Mary Martha Lappe. Mrs. Lappe is a founder of the school, the first Chair of the Dance Department, and the founder of HSPVA Friends.

Purpose: College scholarship for an outstanding dance senior planning to pursue a degree in dance at an accredited college, university, or conservatory

Amount: $1,000 for one or more graduating dance seniors

Selection Process: Determined by the Kinder HSPVA Dance Faculty based on the following criteria: attendance over four years; ability to receive and apply constructive feedback; grades in dance classes; progress made in dance; self-discipline and commitment to the art form; and strength of the university/conservatory program in consideration.

Application Requirements: Students must submit an HSPVA Friends General Application Form.

Made possible by jazz pianist and composer Jason Moran (Instrumental ’93)

Purpose:College scholarship for an outstanding jazz senior planning to pursue a degree in jazz at an accredited college, university, or conservatory

Amount: Up to $1,000 for one graduating jazz senior

Selection Process: This scholarship assists jazz students who have been a member of one of the official Kinder HSPVA jazz ensembles for at least two years. Selection is determined by the Instrumental Music faculty with input from Mr. Moran. In the event of a tie, the student(s) with the greatest financial need will take precedence.

Application Requirements: Students must submit an HSPVA Friends General Application Form. Additionally, applicants must submit a recording. Mr. Moran will listen to each recording and share feedback with the applicants. Students should email their recording to Patrice Wooten Hightower at phightower@hspvafriends.org. Purpose: Merit- and need-based college scholarship for an outstanding jazz senior planning to pursue a degree in jazz at an accredited college, university, or conservatory

Amount: $1,000 for one graduating jazz senior

Selection Process: Determined by the Kinder HSPVA Instrumental Music faculty, based on the student’s passion for jazz, leadership qualities, contributions to the department, and financial need.

Application Requirements: Students must submit an HSPVA Friends General Application Form.

Purpose: College scholarship for an outstanding senior planning to pursue a career in theatre education

Amount: $1,000 for one graduating senior

Selection Process: Determined by the Kinder HSPVA Theatre faculty based on the merit of the student’s application.

Application Requirements: Students must submit an HSPVA Friends General Application Form.

Donated anonymously in honor of internationally acclaimed sculptor Mark di Suvero

Purpose: College scholarship for an outstanding visual arts senior for continued education in the field of sculpture at an accredited college, university or art school

Amount: $1,000 for one graduating visual arts senior

Selection Process: Determined by the Kinder HSPVA Visual Arts Faculty based on the merit of the students’ application and their accomplishments in the discipline of sculpture
